In a shocking case of animal cruelty, two mahouts were caught on camera while they were beating an elephant in rejuvenation camp in Thekkampatti, Tamil Nadu. A video of the same surfaced on social media and went viral. The elephant was thrashed after it refused to respond to commands.
In the video, which was recorded by a visitor, elephant's cries could be heard as the two men thrashed elephant's legs mercilessly. According to media reports, the female elephant named Jayamalyatha of Andal Temple, Srivilliputhur was taken to the rejuvenation camp after it stopped following commands where the mahout identified as Vinil Kumar and his assistant Sivaprasad tied the elephant to a tree and continued to hit her for 20 seconds.
After the video went viral, accused were suspended from service and were arrested under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.
Every year, a 48-day rejuvenation camp is held for temple elephants in Coimbatore. This year, 28 elephants were taken to the camp.
Last year in May, the death of a pregnant elephant raised questions on humanity and shocked the entire country. A cracker-stuffed pineapple was allegedly fed to an elephant in Palakkad, Kerala, following which, the jumbo breathed its last.
