Trump’s visit is meant to bolster US interests; Indians have nothing to gain from this Modi show

Donald Trump and Narendra Modi can be rightly termed as birds of the same feather. They share many things in common. Allegiance to corporate capital, hatred towards minorities, contempt for immigrants, preaching of Islamophobia, etc, are their most savoured traits. That is why within no time they became thick friends, both politically and individually. For the first Republic Day celebrations in his second innings of power, Narendra Modi's desire was to invite Donald Trump as the guest of honour. Though he was inclined to accept the invitation Trump was forced to drop it due to pre-occupations at home. That vacuum was filled by Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil. He is also another bird of Modi-Trump feather.

Now at Narendra Modi's glee and satisfaction President Trump planned his state visit to India on February 24 and 25. The Modi government, the Sangh Parivar and the American lobby in various sectors of social life are trying in unison to create a feeling that the whole of India is eagerly waiting for Trump's visit. But the vast majority of people sincerely believe that his visit is not in the interest of this great nation. It is the will of the people that is written on the wall of contemporary India: ‘Trump Go Back’.

The votaries of the free market and corporate profit in both the US and India were eyeing upon a multi-faceted trade agreement as to the major outcome of the visit. Both the sides were calculating that such an agreement would rescue their crisis-hidden economies. The US wanted to save their shrinking market at the expense of India. The same was the hope from the Indian side too! Of late both the sides have come to the final conclusion that a comprehensive trade pact would be out of their reach at this juncture. It speaks about the clash of economic interests existing between the 'strategic allies' irrespective of their political and diplomatic togetherness. Still President

Donald Trump in his typical style has made it clear that there exist differences between him and Modi in the matters of sharing markets. Still, the US side is keen to extract the maximum from India, which may badly affect the interests of Indian peasantry. According to reports, dairy manufacturers will be affected by the possible agreements which may be signed during the visits. The history of Indo-American relations says that it was never a partnership between equals. India was always on the loser’s side. During the Narendra Modi regime, the Trump policy of ‘America first’ has its impact on Indian diplomacy.

To celebrate the ‘most consequential partnership’ as Indian foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Singh called it, President Trump is coming with a heavy-duty cabinet delegation comprising his son-in-law Jared Kushner, treasury and commerce secretary, trade representatives, national security adviser and others. But the resentment in the US administration against India is aired by Trump himself by dubbing India as a 'tariff King'. He stated that the US has been not treated very well by India. At the same time, Trump was hopeful that he would now be able to manage a big deal with India. It is his sort of a promise to the US business tycoons that the big Indian market would be open before them sooner than later.

It shows that Donald Trump, a Republican candidate for US presidentship, views this visit as part of his electioneering for which he expects Narendra Modi to render all support. From his side, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined the Trump bandwagon during his last visit to the US. Forgetting even the basics of diplomacy, Narendra Modi from his Howdy Modi platform in Houston openly lent support to Trump. Now also Modi is eager to do the same. Taking note of that eagerness Donald Trump responded to US media, "he (Modi) told me, we will have seven million people between the airport and the event and the cricket stadium in Motera is going to be the largest stadium in the world. So, it is going to be very exciting". This political bean between Modi and Trump is a matter of concern only for the political supporters who represent the rich and the crooked. That is why the people of India are asking Trump to go back.

Narendra Modi's commitment to mobilize seven million people in Ahmedabad to greet Trump shows the gravity of the ‘love affair’ between the two leaders. It is hypocritic and meaningless to glorify the bankrupt policies of two failed leaders who wished to cover up their debacles with the philosophy of hatred. This treacherous style is evident by the wall constructed by Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad. This wall is built to hide the real face of vibrant Gujarat. After 20 years of chief ministership in Gujarat and six years of prime ministership Modi can only build a wall to hide the pitiable plight of Indian masses. Both urban and rural India is reeling under poverty. Humongous inequality is staring at the five trillion dollar promise of Modi government. Which wall can hide the glaring inequality in India where 63 individuals handle wealth more than the total budget allocation of the country? Studies say that the income gap between top 10 per cent and lowest 10 per cent of rural India is 500 times and urban India is 50,000 times.

The wall in Ahmedabad is an apt icon to signify Modi's affection to Trump, the builder of a bigger wall in Mexico border. It is also characteristic of Prime Minister Modi, who is bent to build a dividing wall among Indians in the name of CAA, NPR and NRC. The people of India have registered their protest against all such walls in unequivocal terms across the country. With no amount of diplomatic and political extravaganza Modi can hide the real face of protesting India from the eyes of the world. Let the patriotic and truthful slogan of real India resonate along the length and breadth of the country: Trump Go Back!
