After the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case, the Congress on Friday said that justice has been done but delayed in the whole process showed the weakness of the system.

The opposition party also claimed rise of crimes against women in last five years even as the Nirbhaya funds to be spent on women's safety remains unused.

"We need reforms in laws as justice was delayed and the family had to fight a lonely battle," said Congress spokesperson Amee Yajnik.

"After the Nirbhaya case in December 2012, the then UPA government had earmarked Rs 100 crore in the Budget, known as Nirbhaya funds. Seven years down the line, there are no details about the funds meant to be spent on women's safety. As per National Crime Record Bureau data, 34,000 rapes take place every year but the conviction rate is only 25 to 27 per cent," said Yajnik

"We should also talk of judicial reforms, but the central government remained silent when the young woman in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh was burnt to death by her rapist. No ruling party MP spoke on the issue," the Congress leader said.

Congress MP Chhaya Verma demanded a check on cybercrime since women many a times fall victim.
