When Modi visited Japan in August 2016, within hours of his landing in Osaka, an agreement was signed with the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, to transform Modi’s constituency, Varanasi, into another Kyoto.

Located in the southern part of Japan, Kyoto, like Varanasi, known for its ancient culture, is often described as Buddhist pilgrimage city.

But, in terms of infrastructure, cleanliness, sewage system Kyoto stands in sharp contrast to Varanasi. Despite being PM’s constituency and his penchant for development, city is sinking this monsoon. Stinking roads, filthy bylanes, polluted Ganga and rickety Ghats are the new characteristics of the Varanasi in the monsoon.

Modi announced that he would transform his Kashi into Kyoto but it has become a Venice, sans its beauty, where boats are used to ferry people in the rain.
