Golu in ‘Mirzapur 2’ challenges her own beliefs: Shweta Tripathi
I think digital platforms and theatres can co-exist as they both deliver different experience to the audience and both have their own significance, says actress Shweta Tripathi
Versatile actor Shweta Tripathi needs no introduction. She is among the few Hindi film industry actresses who dared to choose off beat stories and characters and made a mark for themselves. No matter how small or big role she had, she always left a mark of her own. She effortlessly slipped into her character Golu in Mirzapur and won praises for it. In the second season of the hugely popular web series, her character will be seen in a new dimension altgether. Shweta in conversation with Raviraj Sinha:
Given COVID situation, do you think OTT has changed entertainment industry. Do you think digital platforms and theatres can co-exist?
I think there is enough sun for all of us to bask in! OTT has done especially well during this lockdown and people have realised that there is entertainment right in your hand on your small screen and on your TV as well. I think both can co-exist because theatre is community experience which is again special watching film in a cinema hall with your popcorn and coffee, something that I miss! What I love about the OTT is that you could be sitting anywhere you can pause episode if you don’t like it you can move on to something else so its all on your finger tips and there is so much content not just from our country but also from across the world. So it’s a very exciting time to be a part of the industry and also a exciting time to be member of the audience.
How is ‘Golu’s character different in Season 2 from Season1?
Golu in season 2 challenges her own beliefs and values. She had a moral instinct in her but everything she had faith in has gone for a toss because two people she loved the most were brutally taken away from her. So when you lose somebody who matters so much that changes you as a person literally. Your priorities and goals change. So it’s a different side of Golu. She is deeply hurt and internally damaged. she is not in the right frame of mind, she doesn’t know what is right or wrong any more.
In Season 1 she had a dialogue that she will never take to violence and now she is flaunting a gun...
As we have seen in season 1, Golu’s sister was killed in front of her so things and situation have changed her. As I said before, she is challenging her own beliefs because she is put in the place which is not the best place to be in. In fact, is Golu’s life, there is so much sadness and I don’t think any of the characters looks happy in this season. So, more than holding a gun, it is why she is holding a gun- that is more important. What has happened and what is happening inside her is far more important.
Do you think the violence in Mirzapur justified? Do you, as an actor feel responsible for whatever is presented through your film/series?
Art is a reflection of what happens in the society and society is reflected in us as individuals. What we have shown is what is actually happening. It’s actually a censored version of what is happening in reality. We all know such type of cases happen in real life in our society. So, to all the people who have problem with the show, I will say, it’s high time we did something about whatever is happening in our country.
What is your take on the aggressive public reactions as nowadays the talk of boycotting film or series is taking place quite often?
Pointing fingers on others is so easy and easier still is to pint fingers on the entertainment industry. These are the kind of people who want to make you feel as if you are the worst kind of person, while they actually may have been the people at fault. So, it’s a shallow attitude. ‘Logon ka kaam hain bolna...’ It doesn’t affect anything or any of us.
What are your upcoming projects?
There was Raat Akeli Hai on Netflix The Gone Game on Voot. Cargo on Netfilx we have released and there is a Mirzapur Season 2 coming out on 23rd October and I am starting shoot of two of my shows in two weeks. One is for Hotstar and another is for Netflix.
How much time do you usually take to prepare for your character?
It depends from character to character. it depends on the project and requirements. it’s a long process. There are no number of days or number of weeks. You have to keep growing. You have to be on your feet all the time, learning and understanding the character as much as possible.
