Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the majority of votes in Sunday's crucial election, surviving the most serious challenge yet to his political dominance and tightening his grip on the nation he has ruled for 15 years.

Turkey's Supreme Election Council (YSK) on early Monday announced that Erdogan "received the absolute majority of all valid votes" with 97.7% of ballot boxes opened, reports Anadolu News Agency.

"The number of votes that have not been counted yet is not enough to affect the outcome," said YSK head Sadi Guven.

Erdogan had won a 52.54% share of the national vote, while the opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) candidate, Muharrem Ince, gained 30.68%. The ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party was also leading in parliamentary elections, with 42.4 per cent of the votes counted, Guven added.

Polling for the presidential and parliamentary elections took place on Sunday. Eight political parties were contesting for the parliamentary polls while six candidates including Erdogan were in the fray for the presidential election.

In a phone call, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also congratulated Erdogan on "the success of the Turkish democratic process and his victory in the presidential elections," said the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

Abbas said: "I wish Turkey more success, progress, and stability."

Erdogan, according to the agency, stressed Turkey’s "continued support” for the Palestinian people and “their just cause and their right to freedom and stability."

Some world leaders sent personal message, while some others took to twitter to congratulate Erdogan

Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani congratulated Erdogan on his success in the presidential and parliamentary elections, according to Turkish sources.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah also sent a cable congratulating Erdogan on his party winning the presidential and parliament elections

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo also congratulated Erdogan in a statement on Twitter.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood also released a message, congratulating Erdogan on his election success.

The group's senior member Ibrahim Munir wrote on Facebook that the group prays for Turkey's further development during Erdogan's term. "May God protect you [Erdogan], the whole Islamic world and the humanity," he said.

Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the Ennahdha Movement in Tunisia, also extended greetings to Erdogan.

In a Twitter post, the Tunisian politician said he congratulated Erdogan, his party and his allies for the renewed confidence they have received from their people
