The person who opened fire at people protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act near the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi on Thursday had gone live on Facebook minutes before he pulled out his gun.

The assailant identified as Ram Bhagat Gopal Sharma (On Facebook he uses the name of Rambhakt Gopal), in the video, can be seen walking around the area of the protest. He is wearing a black sleeveless bomber jacket.

Ram Bhagat Gopal Sharma was heard shouting "Yeh lo azaadi (here's your freedom)". The incident left Shadaab Farukh, injured. Later the assailant was overpowered by others around him.

The area was heavily barricaded after the incident, and traffic has been diverted to other routes.

Ram Bhagat Gopal's previous posts on social media sites seemed to indicate that he had come prepared for the consequences of his action. "On my last journey, take me draped in saffron and shout slogans of Jai Shri Ram," read one of his posts.

Another post read "Shaheen Bagh, Game Over". A third post stated that there were no "Hindu media" at the protest site.

Earlier, two men, one of them armed with a gun, had tried to threaten protesters at Shaheen Bagh with a pistol on Tuesday. They were, however, overpowered by those at the venue and whisked away before any harm could be done.

In another post, Ram Bhagat says that he was doing this for Chandan Gupta, who was killed during Kasganj Violence on January 26, 2018.

According to witnesses, the man allegedly told the protesters to clear the road or die.
