With Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary (eastern Uttar Pradesh) Priyanka Gandhi by her side, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination from the Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency on Thursday.

Sonia Gandhi embarked on a roadshow before filing her papers for the constituency. She also offered puja at the Congress’ central office in Rae Bareli before starting the roadshow.

Talking to media after filing her nomination, Sonia Gandhi warned Prime Minister Modi without naming him and said that the BJP should not forget 2004 Lok Sabha polls. It’s important to recall here that defying all predictions, Congress had won the 2004 polls and formed the government at the centre.

When asked if Modi is invincible, Sonia Gandhi replied, “Not at all. Don’t forget 2004. Vajpayee Ji was invincible, but we won.”

Known as a Congress bastion, the Rae Bareli seat - where voting will be held in the fifth-phase on May 6 - will see a straight contest between the former Congress chief and Dinesh Pratap Singh, who recently joined the BJP after leaving the Congress.

Mahagathbandhan has not fielded any candidate in this Congress bastion.Sonia Gandhi had won from this constituency in 2004, 2006 (by polls), 2009 and 2014.
