Demanding the resignation of JNU’s Vice Chancellor, M Jagdesh Kumar, thousands of demonstrators led by leaders of the Opposition parties hit the streets on Thursday protesting against the recent violence at JNU.
Among those who joined the peoples’ march against the JNU violence, called by the JNUSU, were CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, CPI chief D Raja, seasoned politician Sharad Yadav, former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and RJD leader Manoj Jha.
However, the protest that started from Mandi House was stopped at Shashtri Bhawan by Delhi Police. Later, a delegation comprising members of the JNUSU and JNUTA was taken to meet HRD officials.
Alleging that “the incident could not have happened without the VC knowing about it”, Yechury said, “For three hours, people wearing masks beat up varsity students. They entered the campus with police being present at the main gate…The VC has to go”.
Taking to Twitter, JNUSU said earlier: “Delhi Police is here to stop us. They, however, could not stop the ABVP terrorists during the JNU terror attack. We are protesting the attack on our president, on our students and on our professors. You should not have dared to attack JNU. We shall fight, we shall win.”
