National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, both former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir were on Sunday placed under house arrest amid soaring tension in the Valley.

In a series of tweets, Abdullah feared the same treatment would be meted out to other Kashmiri leaders as well.

"I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight and the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us," he said.

In another tweet he added: "To the people of Kashmir, we don’t know what is in store for us but I am a firm believer that what ever Almighty Allah has planned it is always for the better, we may not see it now but we must never doubt his ways. Good luck to everyone, stay safe & above all PLEASE STAY CALM."

There were reports of restrictions being placed on the movement of other Kashmiri political leaders as well.

Officials said the internet services have been “partially suspended” in “parts of J&K”.

Kashmir has been under the grip of panic as the central government has deployed massive paramilitary forces and Army troops in the Valley and has suddenly called off Amarnath Yatra, a very unusual move.

The clueless common people have been queueing up at grocery shops and petrol pumps to store the essentials in anticipation of troubled times ahead.
