No NRC detention center in Assam, 10 inmates of 6 Detention Centres died in last one year, admits Modi govt
Till now, only six detention centers have been constructed in Assam, as per the government’s own records
In a sharp contrast to what it propagated in favor of CAA-NRP-NRC in order to gain political mileage, Modi government on Tuesday accepted that Modi government has not constructed any NRC detention center in Assam so far.
In reply to a question asked by the TMC leader Nusrat Jahan Ruhi, MOS Home Affairs, Kishan Reddy said that there are only six detention centers in Assam with the total capacity of 3,331.
As per the data provided by the minister, Tezpur detention centre have the maximum capacity, followed by Dibrugarh detention centre where 680 inmates can be kept.
Government has also informed that a detention centre with the capacity of 3000 people is under construction in Matia, Goalpara.
According to the Modi government, 10 inmates of the 6 Detention Centres in Assam, where declared foreigners/convicted foreigners are kept, died in different hospitals from 1st March 2019 to 29th February 2020.
On the question of whether National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has been allowed to visit the detention centres, the government replied, “During last one year, from 1st March 2019 to 29th February 2020, three teams of National Human Right Commission (NHRC) have visited Detention Centers in Assam and have interacted with declared.”
