Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan: Don’t be Panic, please co operate
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has requested people to cooperate with alerts given by the authorities in connection with the heavy downpour and floods in the State. The death tolls have been 256 since the Monsoon started on May 29. During this intense phase, 65 lives have been lost. On Thursday, at Nenmara in Palakkadu district. 8 members of a family were killed due to landslip.
The State is going through an extremely grave situation. Most of the villages are heavily affected. 58 dams of the KSEB and 22 dams of the Water Resources Department have touched the maximum level. This is an extra ordinary situation that has not happened in Kerala in the Past.
All kinds of interventions and rescue measures are in full swing. When an alert is issued at a particular area, people of that place must move away to safer places. It is dangerous to stick to the place seeing that it is not affected by the flood. Later it may be flooded and rescue operations will be more difficult. So, once a warning is issued, people must move to safer places without any delay.
Those who are living on the downstream of Periyar in Ernakulam district and Chalakkudi in Thrissur district must be more cautious. The Water level of Periyar may rise up to one metre. Chalakkudi river also faces the same situation. Taking this seriously, those who live on the downstream of these rivers (within one kilometre from the banks) must move to safer places.
Those live within half kilometre from the flooded area of Aluva in Ernakulam district must also be on alert. If instructed to move away, they must move to safer places. For this, the cooperation of the people is necessary. Forces have been deployed in areas where urgent help is needed. Instructions have been issued to save stranded people. Water level may rise at Kuttanandu{Alappuzha district}. Kottayam, Chengannur {Alappuzha district}, and Thiruvalla {Pathanamthitta district} are also vulnerable to water level rise. “Special intervention and care is being given to Ranni, Aranmula and Kozhenchery at Pathanamthitta district.” The Chief Minister said.
Rescue operations in full swing. More forces will be deployed.
The Chief Minister said that the Government was using all possible measures for rescue operations. As per the demands of the State, more forces will reach the State immediately. 52 teams comprising of Army, Navy, Air Force, Fire Force, NDRF and Coast Guard are already engaged in the rescue process. 12 column Army, 8 helicopters of the Air Force,5 diving teams of navy, 3 teams and one Helicopter of Coast Guard are operational now.
The Chief Minister spoke to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, and Defence Minister on Thursday and was offered of all assistance. Instructions have been issued to officers in connection with this.
The Chief Secretary convened a video conference with The Central Cabinet Secretary and discussed matters that have to be implemented. 40 additional teams of the NDRF will reach the state. 200 Life buoys and 250 life jackets will be given. More jackets have been demanded. Special Force of the Army equipped with more rescue instruments will be deployed here. 10 helicopters have been supplied by the Airforce. 10 more will reach the State by Thursday afternoon.
All boats available in the State will be used for rescue operations. Motor boats are also sought for this purpose.
Much attention is being given to health care. Medical camps are needed in this situation. Community kitchens will start functioning at camps.
4 helicopters of Air Force will be sanctioned. 4 helicopters of the navy will also reach. Marine Commandos will reach the flooded areas. 2 ships of the Coast Guard have started their journey to Kochi. 2 Gemini teams will arrive. 5 more will come. More helicopters are promised from the part of Forces. Dry fruit packets will be distributed by the Forces. Packaged drinking water will be distributed by the Indian Railway.
A committee, including the senior officers of Kerala and Tamilnadu is constituted to resolve the practical issues related to the opening of Mullaperiyar dam. The President of the Committee is the Chairman of the Central water Commission. PSC has been requested to reschedule interviews. Government servants will continue their rescue measures on holidays as well. Work on holidays will be counted as duty. Electricity and communication will be ensured.
