Two govt teachers in UP suspended for not hoisting flag
Two teachers in UP's Banda district have been suspended for not hoisting the national flag in a government school on Independence Day, officials said on Sunday.
Basic Education Officer Harishchandra Nath said that the action was taken against the teachers after a video was obtained which showed that the national flag had not been hoisted at an upper primary government school in Sirsauna village in Naraini area of the district.
Headmaster Manoj Ahirwar and assistant teacher Ganga Pooja have been suspended with immediate effect, he said.
The block education officers of Jaspura and Kamasin have been asked to probe the matter and submit their reports within 15 days, he added.
Manohar Parrikar's son tests corona positive, hospitalised
Former Defence Minister and late BJP leader Manohar Parrikar's elder son Utpal was on Sunday hospitalised after he tested positive for coronavirus.
"On the advice of doctors and to take proper line of treatment, I've got admitted to hospital. Thank you everyone for the wishes," tweeted Utpal Parrikar, who is also a member of the state Bharatiya Janata Party executive committee.
Union Minister of State for Defence and AYUSH Shripad Naik has also been admitted to a private hospital, after he along with his wife tested positive for coronavirus last week. Naik is a Lok Sabha MP from the North Goa seat.

China renews alert for rainstorms
China's national observatory on Sunday renewed a yellow alert for rainstorms in several provinces and regions till Monday morning.
From 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday, torrential rains and rainstorms are expected to lash parts of the Sichuan Basin, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, Yunnan and Guangxi, the National Meteorological Centre said.
According to the forecast, some regions are likely to see over 70 mm of hourly precipitation, accompanied by thunderstorms and gales, reports Xinhua news agency.
The Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration issued an orange alert on Saturday for floods in parts of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu from Saturday evening to Sunday evening.
Turkey records highest daily Covid-19 cases for 45 days
Turkey has recorded the highest number of daily coronavirus cases for the past 45 days, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.
The country reported 1,256 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, raising the total caseload to 248,117, Xinhua news agency quoted the Minister as saying in a tweet.
Meanwhile, 21 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 5,955, Koca said.
Turkish health professionals conducted 67,214 tests in the past 24 hours, bringing the overall number of tests to 5,659,286, he said.
A total of 992 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total recoveries to 229,972 in Turkey since the outbreak, Koca added.
The rate of pneumonia in the infected patients is 7.6 per cent and the number of seriously ill patients is 668, he stated.
Petrol prices rise across metros after 47-day halt
After a pause of over 45 days, petrol prices rose across the four metros on Sunday.
In the national capital, the fuel was sold at Rs 80.57 per litre, 14 paise higher than the previous level. Petrol price was at Rs 80.43 in Delhi since June 29.
The price hike comes at a time when crude oil prices have been rising and the Brent crude is trading around $45 per barrel.
Price of petrol in the other key metros, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata on Sunday were Rs 87.31, Rs 83.75 and Rs 82.17 per litre respectively.
Nine more Covid deaths, 1,102 new cases in Telangana
The COVID-19 tally of Telangana rose to 91,361 with 1,102 new cases reported on Sunday while nine more deaths pushed the death toll to 693.
The number of daily tests were reduced by over 8,000, resulting in less number of cases detected during the last 24 hours ending Saturday 8 p.m.
A total of 39 testing laboratories and 323 rapid antigen testing centres conducted 12,120 tests against 21,239 tests conducted the previous day. The officials claim that the number of tests was still much higher than the state's target of 5,600 as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark of 140 tests per million per day.
Nepal COVID-19 toll reaches 102
Nepal has registered a total of 102 deaths from the novel coronavirus so far, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.
"Death toll from the pandemic reached 102 after three new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours," Jageshwor Gautam, a Ministry spokesperson, told Xinhua news agency on Saturday.
On May 16, Nepal reported the first death from the pandemic -- a 29-year-old woman.
Till July 21, Nepal reported a total of 40 deaths.
Brazil reports over 40,000 new COVID-19 cases
Brazil has reported 41,576 new COVID-19 cases and 709 more deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health.
The new figures on Saturday increased the national caseload to 3,317,096 and the death toll reached 107,232, Xinhua news agency reported.
With this, Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths, just after the US.
23 arrested in Goa rave party held amid pandemic
Amid a sustained spike in COVID-19 cases, the Crime Branch of the Goa Police on Sunday busted a rave party in the beach village of Vagator in North Goa.
Twenty three persons, including three foreigners, were arrested, and drugs worth Rs nine lakh seized, the Goa Police said in a statement issued here.
The rave party was being held at a posh row village complex called 'Firangipani Villas' at Vagator beach village.
24 new cases take Agra COVID-19 tally to 2,290
Even as the 55-hour long weekend lockdown continues, 24 fresh cases of Covid-19 have taken Agra's total tally to 2,290 with 102 deaths.
The number of active cases in the district now is 339. Health officials said 78,013 samples had been tested. The number of recoveries is 1,849 and the rate now is 80.79 per cent. The number of containment zones remains high at 155.
District authorities said the mini lockdown will continue till 5 a.m. (Monday morning). Markets will remain closed, except the chemist shops and doctors' clinics.
Due to the weekend lockdown and continued closure of the schools and other educational institutes, the Independence Day celebrations remained more of a formality. The national Tricolour was unfurled at the collectorate and the Divisional Commissioner's office. However, there were no march-pasts and cultural programmes.

4-year-old becomes youngest COVID-19 patient in Bhutan
A four-year-old child has become the youngest COVID-19 patient in Bhutan, after she and her mother tested positive for the virus, the Health Ministry said.
The child and her mother are primary contacts of a 25-year old man who tested positive for on August 12 from Phuentsholing town, Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry as saying.
He has no known recent travel history and works at the mini dry port under Regional Revenue and Customs Office.
The Ministry said that they were tested while in a quarantine facility at Phuentsholing town.
13 year old raped and killed in UP district
In another case of brutality, a 13 year old Dalit girl was raped and killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, said police.
Her body was found in a sugarcane field on Saturday.
Two men from her village have been arrested.
The girl had been strangled, her eyes gouged out and her tongue cut.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday in a village close to the Nepal border. Her body was found in the fields of one of the accused.
New Zealand reports 13 new COVID-19 cases
New Zealand reported 13 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, including 12 from the Auckland cluster, said Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.
The 13th cases was from a managed isolation facility, reports Xinhua news agency.
The 13 new cases brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in New Zealand to 1,271.
The case from the managed isolation is a child returning New Zealand from Afghanistan via Dubai on August 3.
Global COVID-19 cases top 21.3mn: Johns Hopkins
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 21.3 million, while the deaths have increased to over 769,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Sunday morning, the total number of cases stood at 21,377,367 and the fatalities rose to 769,652, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of infections and fatalities at 5,359,748 and 169,463, respectively, according to the CSSE.
Brazil came in the second place with 3,317,096 infections and 107,232 deaths.
Alert sounded in Telangana as heavy rains trigger flood situation
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao sounded an alert as heavy rains triggered flood situation in some parts of the state and also directed the concerned officials to be on alert.
Several tanks and canals were overflowing on Saturday due to the heavy rains lashing the state under the influence of a low pressure area off Bay of Bengal.
Parts of Warangal town was inundated due to incessant rain. The local authorities launched rescue and relief operations. Local authorities shifted people from affected areas to the relief camps.
Meanwhile, 14 farmers were rescued by a helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district. The farmers were stuck in floodwater in Kundanpally village when they were on their fields to pump out excess water.

K'taka reports highest single-day spike of 8,818 Covid cases
Karnataka reported its highest single-day spike of 8,818 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, which pushed its overall tally to 2.19 lakh.
In the past 24 hours, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 3,495 infections, the highest single day rise, as the city tally rose to 87,680, out of which 34,858 are active, heath officials said.
Among other places, Ballari witnessed 759 infections, followed by Mysuru 635, Belagavi 358, Davangere 327, Daskshina Kannada 271, Udupi 241, Dharwad 239 and Vijayapura 232.
Russia begins production of COVID-19 vaccine
Russia has begun production of the first batch of vaccines against COVID-19, its health ministry said in a statement released on Saturday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday announced the world's first registered vaccine against the novel coronavirus, Sputnik V, which is named after the space satellite launched by Moscow in 1957.
The vaccine was created by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, a medical institute located near Moscow, Xinhua news agency reported.
Russia will offer the vaccine to other countries once its own citizens are vaccinated, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said Wednesday, adding that doubts over the effectiveness of the vaccine are unfounded.
So far, Russia has tallied a total of 917,884 cases, with 15,617 deaths and 729,411 recoveries.
