On Sunday PM Narendra Modi was greeted by the Indian American diaspora at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event at Houston. Twitterati in India sounded excited, claiming, “This has never happened before.”

However, in 1961, when freedom fighter and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru went to the USA, he was received with similar pomp and show by the then US President John F Kennedy, and the American population.

In USSR too, Nehru was greeted by over 50,000 people in 1955. A praised and charismatic leader as Pandit Nehru was, he was received with the same level of enthusiasm by both of then superpowers, USA and USSR.

In a roadshow with the then US Presiden Eisenhower in 1954, Jawaharlal Nehru was received with a warm welcome.

Twitterati seem to think India’s image has been established now, by Narendra Modi, saying the global image has been “transformed,” but even in the 60s, Nehru had done that.

As the Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Steny H Hoyer praised the vision of Nehru to form India as what she is, amid praise for Narendra Modi, a necessary reminder tells us that India will always be known to the world as ideals of Gandhian and Nehruvian philosophies.

Even earlier, Barrack Obama mentioned Nehru’s contributions to India, when Manmohan Singh, then Prime Minister visited the United States.
