CWG 2018: Mary Kom wins gold; Saina sets date with Sindhu in women’s singles final

Star Indian boxer M.C. Mary Kom won gold in the women's 48 kilogram category at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) on Saturday. Mary defeated Kristina O'Hara of Northern Ireland by a unanimous 5:0 verdict to take the title.

India's Sanjeev Rajput too clinched the gold medal in men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions. Sanjeev shot a total of 454.5 to create a Commonwealth Games record. Grzegorz Sych of Canada finished second with 448.4 and Dean Bale of England bagged the bronze medal with 441.2 points.

Indian boxers too put up an impressive performance as Gaurav Solanki won the gold medal in the men's flyweight (52 kilogram) category (4:1 verdict against the impressive Brendan Irvine of Northern Ireland in the final) and Manish Kaushik got home a silver medal.

Meanwhile, India's Manish Kaushik had to be content with silver in the men's lightweight (60kg) division. Kaushik lost 2:3 to Harry Garside of Australia in a hard-fought final.

In another good news for India, world No.3 P.V Sindhu set up an all-Indian women's singles final with World No.12 Saina Nehwal in women's badminton competition at the 21st Commonwealth Games on Saturday. This will be first ever all-Indian badminton final at the Commonwealth Games, with India assured of both gold as well as the silver medal.

While Sindhu thrashed Canada's Michelle Li in straight games 21-18, 21-8 in the semi-final, Saina overcame a stiff contest from Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour winning by 21-14, 18-21, 21-17, and set her date with her compartriot in the summit clash on Sunday.

Both Sindhu and Saina kept their unbeaten run alive and their victories over lower-ranked opponents went on expected lines.

In men’s single, world No.1 Kidambi Srikanth set his date with World No.7 Lee Chong Wei in the summit clash after both the shuttlers registered comfortable wins in their respective semi-finals.

India's Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwik Rankireddy will play for bronze after going down closely 22-20, 18-21, 16-21 to England's Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in their badminton mixed doubles

In the men’s javelin, India's Neeraj Chopra won the title at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) on Saturday. Neeraj registered his season's best performance of 86.47 metres in the final.

In squash, defending champions Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa outplayed England's Laura Massaro and Sarah-Jane Perry to storm into the final of women's doubles squash. Dipika and Joshna prevailed in straight games 2-0 (11-10, 11-5) to seal their place in the final.

India stands at the third position at CWG 2018, with 22 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronxe medals. Australia lead the chart with 179 medals, 66 medals ahead of England at number two position.
