What's at stake?

In Kairana, where it's a direct contest between a united opposition and the BJP, 384 faulty VVPATs were replaced. Kairana byelection, a seat BJP won in 2014, is seen as a testing ground for Opposition unity ahead of the 2019 elections.

Bypoll to Maharashtra's Palghar Lok Sabha seat was necessitated after the demise of sitting BJP MP Chintaman Wanga. Shiv Sena has fielded his son Srinivas Vanga, while BJP gave the ticket to Rajendra Gavit. This decision of Shiv Sena has further strained its ties with ally BJP.

Jokihat bypolls in Bihar is seen as a litmus test for Nitish Kumar after sitting JD(U) lawmaker Sarfaraz Alam quit his party after JD(U) joined BJP and he shifted to RJD. He recently contested from the Araria Lok Sabha seat in March and also won the by-poll.
RJD has now fielded Shahnawaz Alam, Sarfaraz Alam's younger brother for the Jokihat by-polls, while the JD(U) candidate is Murshid Alam.

The only parliamentary seat in Nagaland was vacated by now Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, also voted in Monday's by-election.

It’s a three-way contest in Chengannur (Kerala), where the Congress is keen on reclaiming ground it lost to the ruling CPM two years ago.

EVM Malfunctioning

There were complaints of EVM malfunctioning at many booths. Repolling was held in 73 polling stations of Kairana and 49 booths in Bhandara-Gondiya on May 30.

Counting of votes for the by-elections to begin soon

The assembly seats where the by-elections were held on Monday are Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Tharali (Uttarakhand), Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Maheshtala (West Bengal), Ampati (Meghalaya), Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra), Shahkot (Punjab), RR Nagar (Karnataka) and Chengannur (Kerala).

The four Lok Sabha seats where bypolls were held were Kairana, Bhandara-Gondiya, Nagaland and Palghar.
