In a bizarre incident, a 59 years old man in Panchkula, Haryana remained stuck inside an MRI machine for about 30 minutes. He was forced to break the MRI machine belt in order to come out of the machine. The doctors and technicians who were conducting the scan, allegedly forgot that the man was inside the machine.
The man was identified as Ramhar Lohan. His shoulder was dislocated while he was driving his two-wheeler and was advised of an MRI scan by the doctors.
Lohan was taken to Panchkula civil hospital for the scan.
He was told by the doctors and the technicians that he was needed to be inside the machine for 10-15 minutes. When he spent about 30 minutes inside the machine, he started feeling suffocated inside as the temperature was rising inside the machine.
"I was advised MRI scan by Dr Lalit Kaushal. The staff who was conducting my MRI scan had told me that it will take only 10 to 15 minutes. But when they did not remove me for more than 30 minutes I started crying. Nobody responded," Lohan told India Today TV.
According to Lohan, no one was present inside the MRI machine room while he was stuck inside the machine. "Nobody was in the machine room when I was struggling to come out," he said to India Today TV.
"The machine was overheating, and I was feeling suffocated. I tried to release myself, but I was tied to the machine with a belt. When I noticed that if I did not come out of the machine I may die, I made the last attempt and was able to break the belt," said Lohan.
Civil surgeon Dr Yogesh Sharma told India Today TV that an investigation is underway, and the report of this investigation was expected by Monday evening.
The in-charge of the MRI department denied all allegations and claims that Lohan was inside the machine for 20 minutes.
"The technician had to take the last three-minute sequence. It was during the last two minutes when the patient panicked. He was not stable and was advised to remain in the machine," Khokhar said to India Today TV.
Lohan claimed that no one came to help him to get out of the MRI machine, however, the hospital staff claims to have helped Lohan to get out of the machine.
The patient in a police complaint also sent to the Health Minister, Director General Health besides others has demanded action against the careless Hospital staff.
"The department probe is currently on. We are waiting for the final report. Suitable action will be taken against the staff if found guilty," Rajiv Miglani, SHO said.
Lohan is demanding for the CCTV footage of the MRI centre and also threatened to sue the hospital for carelessness.
