Bihar: Muslim man lynched to death in Patna’s Phulwari Sharif over cattle theft suspicion

A 32-year-old man in Bihar’s Patna was lynched to death by a mob over suspicion of cattle theft on Wednesday. All the accused were arrested immediately, the police said, as reported by NDTV.

Six people who were named accused in the complaint have been arrested, the police said. The incident took place on Wednesday morning in Phulwari Sharif, Patna.

Muhammad Alamgir, the victim was beaten up after he was seen untying a buffalo from a cattle shed at around 3 am. A person who was with Alamgir managed to escape.

A local resident told to Newsclick on condition of anonymity that Alamgir was tied to a pole and thrashed for several hours and then left in the open. He kept lying there for a few hours. Then the police arrived. By that time it was too late.

Muhammad Alamgir, who was thrashed for several hours, passed away on Wednesday afternoon in the hospital.

In 2017, after a steady rise in attacks by cow vigilante groups over three years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken out about the incidents, saying that killing people out of devotion for cows is not acceptable. But in last one and a half months about a dozen lynching incidents have been reported across the state of Bihar. In July 2019 too, three men were beaten to death over the suspicion of cattle theft in the state.
