Not In My Name: Thousands of voices to rage across cities

If the nation was somewhat shocked by the lynching of Mohd Akhlaq in September 2015, its collective conscience has definitely been kicked out of its slumber by the killing of Junaid, a 15-year-old Muslim boy on a train in the outskirts of Delhi last week.

It prompted Gurgaon-based filmmaker Saba Dewan to call for a ‘Not in my name’ protest at the capital’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday evening. News of the protest spread like a wildfire across the country and on Wednesday, protests are to be held at 12 locations across India: New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Allahabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Patna.

Events have been planned in London and Toronto too. Boston and Pune will hold similar protests on June 29, followed by Chennai and Karachi on July 1.

The organisers have called upon participants to design their own banners and shun party or organisation banners.
