Seven students of JNU, St Stephen's College and Delhi University, including a girl, were attacked by a mob when they were returning from a picnic in Faridabad on Monday. A girl student who was part of the group alleged that the mob groped her with an intent to rape her.

They alleged that when they approached Surajkund police station, cops misbehaved with them instead of registering an FIR.

A zero FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj north police station next day on August 15 under IPC section of 323, 341, 506, 354, 365, 511, 506 and 34 and eventually transferred the case to Surajkund police station.

Here’s full account of JNU students (names withheld) who were assaulted at Surajkund:

On the 14th of August, I along with some of my friends had decided to explore the Bharadwaj Lake, situated inside the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary in Faridabad. We had gone there to have some leisure time. While it was about 8.30 in the evening, we decided to head back to our campus, and for the same, I along with two of my other friends decided to go to the main road on my friend’s bike and the four remaining friends of ours started walking towards the cab which was parked just outside the sanctuary, closely following us within our range. At around 9.30 pm, we got late following the cab’s response of not coming. Just as we started going towards the main road, we were interrupted and intervened by three persons, who kept on asking what relation my friend had with us given that she was a girl. They also asked what purpose we had for visiting that place. On replying to those questions, we were suddenly attacked by them on lines of gender, religion and caste. The mob suddenly grew bigger and at about 8-9 persons gathered there on their call. And they all started assaulting us with their lathis (thick stick). The mob did stop beating us and they constantly hurled abuses such as “Katwa, Mussalman” and screamed “Randi and Chinaal” at my friend, who was by this time terrified beyond explanation. And they had the intention to rape her and kill us. At this moment they asked for our ID s and they manhandled us and broke my phone. They tried to grope my friend and her experience can only be termed as traumatic and tragic to say the least. The wounds afflicted on her were primarily on her chest, right abdomen, right breast, right leg and knee. In the meantime, I along with my other friend were rounded up and beaten with full force for the simple reason that I was sporting a beard; for which my identity was related to be of a Muslim that acted as a final nail in the coffin and became a more powerful reason for them to beat us. I was mercilessly beaten up on my back and my right leg and upper torso and all three of us were stomped on our chest. By this time our remaining friends promptly called the second cab driver and pleaded him to come and rescue us. They said that “Aap jaldi se police ya kissi ko bhi leke aayiye jo humari madaad kar sakey” and they responded by calling our other friends from some distance form where the incident happened They were slapping us constantly and trying to prove that we were “Cattle thieves” and we were basically from the Islamic community. At this moment, one of the accused personally attacked my friend and tried to tear away her clothes and had the intention to rape her as they were saying things like “Iss ko yahi pe kare ya andaar leke jaye” and things like “In dono ladko ko maar dete hai aur ladki ko apne paas rakh lete hai” and injure her. And this ordeal that lasted for almost couple of hours we barely managed to save our lives and we escaped with the help of two locals named as Ashish and Sumit; who took us out of the situation and the hostage crisis. We immediately went to the Surajkund Police Station and tried to file in a complaint, but were promptly refused to do so at the request of the police officer, who made us write an apology letter and insulted my friend by telling her “Yeh England ka free sex ka culture jail mein karwatey hai” and questioned about her attire by telling her “Tera kapda cheena huwa hai ya itna hi hai” (she was wearing a dress) and also questioned her about the company of the boys she was with. We had to save our life which became our priority at that moment and dictated us the apology letter to write and they constantly harassed us adding more to the nightmarish experience that we had gone through. It shames us to see how quickly and how unpredictable such incidents can usher and change your idea of sense and sensibility, thus breaking every sense of rationality and logic that we have learned through our experiences and practical knowledge.
