The newly-built Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. On the occasion, it was announced that the stadium has been renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will now be known as the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Union home minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju were also present. The President also performed the Bhumi Pujan of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave.
The refurbished stadium was inaugurated ahead of the pink-ball Test between India and England. Since the stadium has been rebuilt from scratch, Team India might face a tough time figuring out the pitches and the ground at large.
The new stadium can seat 1,32,000 spectators, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world. It has left behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Eden Gardens in terms of seating capacity. The stadium also has 11 pitches. The dressing rooms are so huge that they can accomodate four teams. There are top notch gymnasiums as well as six indoor practice pitches.
Motera was also in news last year for hosting the Namaste Trump event. It will be a part of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave which will also house venues for other sports and will also have a hockey field as well as a football-athletics stadium.
