After 383 days, farmers leave Ghazipur protest site

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait and his supporters vacated Ghazipur protest site at Delhi-UP border after suspending their year-long protest against the three farm laws.

For past 383 days, farmers had been camped at Ghazipur to protest the farm laws. On Wednesday they made their way back home following the repeal of farm laws.

BKU leader Rakesh Tikait thanked his supporters before leaving the site and said: “I am thankful to everyone who has been with us. I also extend my gratitude to the people who ran langars, villagers who brought essentials for us. Talks are underway with the Centre after withdrawal of 3 farm laws. Our movement is suspended, not withdrawn.”

The farm laws were repealed by Parliament on November 29, but farmers did not leave the protest sites immediately. They continued to protest until government agreed to their other demands as well.

Besides Ghazipur, Singhu and Tikri borders had been the other protest sites. Farmers had laid siege to Delhi's three borders on November 26 last year. Meanwhile, all barricades at Singhu border have been dismantled now. However, the road is not open for traffic yet.
