AIB ‘roasted’ over PM Modi meme, faces FIR, deletes post

Mumbai Cyber Police registered an FIR against All India Bakchod’s co-founder Tanmay Bhat for allegedly insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The FIR was registered at cyber police station at Bandra-Kurla Complex under section 500 (defamation) of IPC and 67 IT act (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).

All Tanmay did was to take a picture of Modi look-alike standing at a railway station and turn it into a meme and post it on Twitter.

After that, he was trolled relentlessly for ‘insulting’ the Prime Minister. Now, it in itself is a matter of debate whether making fun of the Prime Minister can be a punishable offence or not.

Meanwhile Tanmay posted screen shot of one of PM’s tweet in which he says that we need more humour in public life.

Then he tweeted that he and AIB will continue making jokes irrespective of trolling or criticism.

AIB is known to create jokes and satire over various socio-political situation and people. It has had its own share of controversies too. There have been objections and FIR on the comedy group for being ‘vulgar’ in their ‘roast’. (‘roast’ is an American genre of humour which is supposed to be vulgar and scathing). It was criticised for making fun of Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar too.

But the unique AIB comedy shows on YouTube continue to be extremely popular.
