Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party members have always resorted to personal attacks on the Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his ancestors including former prime ministers Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Apart from him, we have his spokesperson Sambit Patra who called the “Nehru-Gandhi Family the thugs of hindustan” and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister leaves no opportunity to mock Italian ancestry of Rahul Gandhi.

The Prime Minister has been widely condemned for crossing the limits of decency.

In contrast, Congress President Rahul Gandhi always kept his focus on the corruption and misgovernance allegations against Modi and BJP rules in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. However, few congress leaders have time and again criticised and have taken a dig at PM.

A few days ago Congress leader and Uttar Pradesh congress committee (UPCC) president Raj Babbar, taunted Modi for his inability to control the value of the Indian rupee against the US dollar by saying that “it was about to touch the age of the Prime Minister’s mother”.

Modi responded, saying “My father left this world 30 years ago. Nobody in my family has any political connections. And yet Congress president doesn’t miss any opportunity to abuse family.” Willfully, Modi refused to take cognisance of the fact that the remarks were made by Congressman Raj Babbar and not Rahul Gandhi

Realising that this is all he can use since his government hasn’t done much in any of the states going to polls, the PM said, “My father left this world 30 years ago. Nobody in my family has any political connections. And yet Congress president doesn’t miss any opportunity to abuse family.” Willfully, Modi refused to take cognisance of the fact that the remarks were made by Raj Babbar and not Rahul Gandhi.

He went on to invoke his mother too. “I am not surprised that Congress leaders are abusing my mother and questioning my caste. Those abusing my family, may have been small time leaders, but they are doing so at the behest of naamdar (a slur used by Modi for Rahul Gandhi). They even attacked my caste even during the Gujarat assembly polls last year.”

However, instead of the emotional advantage that Modi had hoped for, the Twitterati was quick to question why the PM was crying and complaining all the time. They went on to compare him with Bollywood’s tragedy queen Nirupa Roy and very soon #PMNirupaRoy began to trend on twitter.

Many criticised Modi and BJP for ignoring governance and rampant corruption under his government. He was critiqued for his focus on personal attacks, lowering the the standard of public discourse.
