Voting in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore constituency cancelled after President Kovind endorses EC’s proposal

The Lok Sabha polls in Vellore constituency in Tamil Nadu was on Tuesday called off over the excess use of money power.

“Accepting the recommendation of EC dated 14th April 2019, President has rescinded the election to Vellore parliamentary constituency, Tamil Nadu,” news agency ANI reported on Tuesday.

The Election Commission had prepared a recommendation in this regard which had been sent to the President on Monday. Since the President signs the notification for Lok Sabha elections, it is he who rescinds it.

The decision came after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from the DMK candidate's office a few days ago.

The district police had filed a complaint against DMK candidate Kathir Anand as well as two party functionaries on the basis of a report from the Income Tax department on April 10.

Vellore was supposed to go to polls during Phase two of the Lok Sabha elections on April 18. The new date for polling is yet to be announced.
