Social scientist, feminist, activist and author Kamla Bhasin passes away

Feminist, activist and women’s rights advocate and writer Kamla Bhasin, passed away at 3 am this morning. Bhasin had been battling cancer for the past few months.

After the news of her demise was shared on Twitter, netizens took to Twitter to pay their tributes to her. Some shared anecdotes about her, while others talked about how much they learnt from her and her work.

Hailed as the stalwart of the feminist movement in India, Bhasin worked on issues related to education, gender and media over the last three decades. Having worked with the United Nations, she was also interested in the development sector. She was one of the founding members of 'Jagori', which is a leading unregistered organisation working towards awakening feminist consciousness across the country.

Through this platform, Kamla Bhasin became instrumental in spreading the message of equality and women empowerment with her songs. She even wrote songs for children and nursery rhymes too with messages of gender equality. Her contribution to the literature underlining social and gender equality in simple words for rural population is precious and will always remain relevant.

Apart from this, Bhasin wrote several books on gender and patriarchy. Her poem Kyunki main ladki hoon, mujhe padhna hai, has often been hailed as one of her best works.
