After gaining a thumping victory in presidential election against the main rival, far-rightist Marine Le Pen, 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron is set to become the new President of France.
After the earlier projections conveyed his victory, he said, “ A new page in our long history has turned tonight.” He also said that he would make an effort to build “a link between Europe and its citizens.”
The youngest ever President of France has been a banker by profession. His victory marks an important juncture in Europe because it is the third time after elections in Austria and the Netherlands, that European voters shot down far-right populists who wanted to restore borders across Europe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Emmanuel Macron on Monday on being elected as the President of France and said he looks forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
