Militants attacked an army camp in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Thursday, killing a captain and two soldiers. Two suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed militants were killed in retaliatory action, official sources claimed.
The militants stormed the camp of a battalion at Panjgaon at Chowkibal early this morning. Two soldiers and an officer were killed in the attack, the sources said. The deceased officer has been identified as Captain Ayush but the names of the two soldiers were not immediately known.
A hunt is on to ascertain if any militant managed to sneak into the camp under the cover of darkness. The personnel at the camp are involved in road opening duties in the area.
On April 26, a top army official Lt Gen JS Sandhu, Commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps which is responsible for security of the Kashmir Valley said, about 150 militants are waiting near the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) to secretly enter Kashmir Valley but asserted that their attempts would be foiled.
In another development, Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested separatist leader Asiya Andrabi under the Public Safety Act. She was arrested in the morning from her residence, sources said.
She is alleged to be the main separatist leader who incites women in the valley to pelt stones at security forces and disrupt normal life.
