A day after a statue of rationalist movement founder EV Ramasamy 'Periyar’ was vandalised in Tamil Nadu and a few days after a statue of Lenin was bulldozed in Tripura, comes the news that a bust of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s has been vandalised in Kolkata’s Kalighat. There had been anger in West Bengal, which like Tripura was ruled for a long time by Left Front governments, over the toppling of Lenin’s statue amidst slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and the seeming justification for the same by no less than the Governor of Tripura, Tathagata Roy. BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav too had celebrated the toppling of the Lenin statue on social media, later deleting his post. Sharing a photograph of the incident on Twitter, Ram Madhav had posted: “People taking down Lenin’s statue ... not in Russia; it is in Tripura. ‘Chalo Paltai' ( let us change).”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took three days to react to the toppling of Lenin statue.

In contrast, the BJP has issued an immediate reaction to the vandalism of the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s bust in Kolkata, demanding strong action against the culprits of the “barbaric act”.
