Woman beaten with rods & stripped by liquor mafia in Delhi 

A 33-year-old woman who took part in a raid against illegal liquor trade was beaten up with rods by a mob in Narela on Thursday. On Wednesday night, the woman accompanied the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal and her team on a liquor raid. Six people have been arrested, the police said on Friday.

“ I was dragged and stripped...I only protested against the open sale of illegal liquor and they punished me,” the woman said.

Swati Maliwal alleges that a mob of over 25 people assaulted the woman with iron rods. “Her clothes were torn and she was paraded naked in the area and the entire incident was filmed and the video was allegedly shared in the area by these criminals. The entire incident proves complete lawlessness and zero fear of law in the area and it is shocking that police did not take any action to protect these women,” she said.

According to police, Praveen, a resident of a JJ cluster in Narela, had been protesting against illegal sale of liquor in the area. On Wednesday night, DCW chief Swati Maliwal and her team conducted a night vigil at Narela as part of their campaign — “Fight the Fear”. Praveen then accompanied them to a house in Narela Pocket 11, owned by Asha and Rakesh, where they seized 350 bottles of liquor.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the woman in hospital and described the incident as "shocking and shameful" and said he would take it up with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.
