Five CRPF men, one militant killed in Anantnag attack

Five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed in a deadly militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag on Wednesday. Another few security and police personnel personnel and a civilian too sustained injuries in the attack. One militant was also killed in the retaliatory action.

Police sources said that militants attacked a joint patrolling party of CRPF and the police outside a private educational institute at K.P. road in district Anantnag, some 55 kms towards south of Srinagar.

The militants, believed to be two to three in number, opened a fussilade of bullets on the troopers and policemen, causing injuries to six  security personnel and a civilian.

They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where five of them died of their injuries, said the sources.

Sources said the forces quickly returned the fire, killing one of the militants.

Reinforcements were rushed to the spot and the whole area was ring-fenced to track down the attackers.

The searches in the area were under way at the time of filing this report.

An eyewitness told National Herald that he was walking along the road when he suddenly heard a rat-a-tat of guns.

"Like many other pedestrians, I ran for life" he said.

This is the major attack on security forces after February 14  Pulwama suicide attack wherein 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives.
