In an embarrassment to ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), student wing of RSS, the National Student Union of India (NSUI), student wing of the Congress swept the students council elections of Mahadevi Kanya Vidyalaya Girls Post Graduate College, in Dehradun after a gap of seven years.

The victory in the girls college, considered to be a bastion of ABVP and RSS, was a shot in the arm for Uttarakhand Congress which was completely decimated in the state assembly polls held early this year. The NSUI girl contestants won all the seven seats of office bearers much to the disappointment of the state’s ruling BJP and RSS leadership.

The polling for the students council of MKP Girls College was held on Saturday. The NSUI had requested the college and district administration to hold the elections under CCTV cameras for transparency. The results which were declared in the evening surprised and stunned the BJP and ABVP leaders.

A large number of BJP leaders including local MLA Khajan Dass reached the college and insisted on recounting. Under pressure from the ruling BJP, the college authorities ordered a recount but the results which were declared past midnight remained the same. The BJP and ABVP leaders left the college in utter embarrassment.

Deepali Thakhur was elected as President of College student Council while Neelam was elected Vice-president and Sarita Rawat as general secretary.

The MKP Girls College was seen as a strong citadel of ABVP and RSS. A few months ago, a national camp of the RSS women wing was held in the premises of the same college.

The college was the first to hold student council elections in the state. The students council poll in DAV College, Dehradun, the biggest college of the state would be held on August 31.

The NSUI had been faring badly in the colleges of the state for almost a decade. However, this time, Uttarakhand Congress Chief Pritam Singh took interest in the NSUI affairs and tried that NSUI put up a united face against ABVP.

Pritam Singh and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat have also congratulated the College NSUI team on their victory.
