Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati’s resignation from Rajya Sabha was accepted after she handed a one-line handwritten note to Vice President Hamid Ansari on Thursday. The resignation note was Mayawati’s second in two days.
The former Rajya Sabha MP had first resigned on Tuesday, after getting worked up on not being allowed to speak beyond the permitted time of three minutes. However, her original resignation wasn’t reportedly accepted as it was not in required format.
According to reports citing Rajya Sabha rules for MPs, the resignation letter must be succinct only stating the person’s intent to quit. Mayawati’s Tuesday letter, however, gave an account of the events the made her arrive at the decision of quitting the Parliament.
Nominated from Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati’s term was supposed to end in April 2018.
The BSP leader made the shock decision to resign after not being allowed to speak on rising violence against the Dalit community. The former UP CM raised the issue in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, saying, "Since the time the BJP has come to power, there has been exploitation of the Dalits, the poor, minorities, and backward castes.”
At the time of resigning on Tuesday, Mayawati had complained that she wasn’t allowed to “speak on issues close to her heart.”
“When I got up to speak, the government did not allow me to complete. Since I was not allowed by the ruling party to raise these issues so, I have decided to give resignation from Rajya Sabha," she said.
