This Raksha Bandhan has set alarm bells ringing for many government employees in the territories of Daman and Diu. All government employees, according to an official circular, are required to become brothers and sisters.
In an unprecedented move, a circular issued by the UT administration, which is headed by Praful Patel—former Minister of State (Home), Gujarat—has asked employees to be present in the office this Rakshabandhan where women employees will tie rakhis to their male colleagues.
The employees working with different departments of the government of Daman and Diu found themselves in a predicament this morning.
The diktat that has been signed by Deputy Secretary (Pers.) Gurpreet Singh, reads: “It has been decided to celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan on 7th August, 2017. In this connection, all officers/departments shall remain open and celebrate the festival collectively at a suitable wherein all the lady staff shall tie rakhis to their male colleagues.
And the order—which has been marked to all the heads of the government offices—comes with an important rider: “Attendance report should be furnished by 5 pm on 8th August 2017.”
The decree has taken many employees by surprise and has kicked up a controversy. However, twitterati is having a field day with many poking fun at the government circular that has put many employees in an embarrassing situation. Here’s a collection of reactions on twitter:
