Karnataka: Kumaraswamy says BJP offering JD(S) MLAs ₹100 crore  

JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday accused the BJP of being in “hurry” to form the government in Karnataka despite falling short of numbers, and resorting to "horsetrading" by trying to lure his party MLAs with money.

Speaking to reporters here after his election as leader of the JD(S) Legislature Party, he alleged that BJP was making attempts to lure his party MLAs with monetary offers. The BJP was trying to “misuse” its power being in office at the Centre, he charged.

They have promised people in my party ₹100 crore in cash and cabinet posts. BJP had given MLAs crores to get to power. I urge Karnataka people to understand what is happening. They have all the money in Delhi,” said Kumaraswamy.

The JD(S) said five of their lawmakers were approached by the BJP. Another Congress lawmaker had claimed the same. The two parties intend to move their lawmakers to a resort and according to new reports, MP DK Suresh was given the responsibility of taking the MLAs to the resort.

Kumaraswamy said the Congress-JD(S) combine had a “clear majority” with the support of 116 MLAs. “Without the numbers, how can they (BJP) form the government?” he asked. Kumaraswamy said he was not out to grab power.

“BJP’s Ashwamedha Yatra started in North, the horses have been stopped in Karnataka. This verdict is to stop the Ashwamedha Yatra,” added Kumaraswamy.

Congress MLA TD Rajegowda said that many of the Congress MLAs were approached by the BJP. “BJP members are trying to approach us but we don't bother about it. I have made it clear to them that I am a committed Congress person,” said Rajegowda.

As the state Assembly polls gave a fractured verdict, the JD(S) and Congress have come together and petitioned Governor Vajubhai Vala to allow the combine to form its government.

Senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said they would be able to prove majority and “it would happen in the natural course of things”. Many lawmakers are “upset” with the “unethical marriage of convenience” between the Congress and the JD(S), he added.
