Year-long farmers’ protest likely to be called off, SKM to make the announcement today

The one year-long historic farmers’ protest that forced the Modi government to withdraw three contentious farm laws is likely to be called off now, National Herald has learned.

Sources told NH that the major unions are in favor of calling off the protest.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) – an umbrella body of the farmers’ unions, which led the movement is likely to announce the decision by evening.

The five-member committee of the SKM constituted for negotiations with the government held a meeting at the AIKS office on Wednesday morning to discuss the draft proposal sent by the government yesterday, December 7.

The Committee will meet SKM leaders at the Singhu border at 2 pm.

According to sources, a section of the farmers, however, is not in favor of calling off the protest until all demands are met.

BKU leader Gurnam Charuni said, “It is not entirely clear when all our demands will be met. If we go back and the government delays, then it will be a problem for us. We will not move till all our demands are met.”

Some farmers’ leaders are particularly apprehensive about the cases slapped on farmers. While farmers want that cases must be withdrawn before they end the stir, the government’s proposal says, cases will only be withdrawn when farmers end the movement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared on television on November 19 to announce that the government was scrapping the laws. 12 days later, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Bill passed by Parliament to repeal three farm laws on December 1.

The Bill to repeal the laws was passed by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on November 29, the first day of the winter session of Parliament.
