Writer, activist, academician prof Ali Javed passes away

Renowned Urdu writer and social activist prof Ali Javed has passed away. He breathed his last at Delhi's GB Pant Hospital on Sunday night. He was 68.

A number of prominent writers and literateurs have condoled Ali Javed's death and recalled his unwavered committment for the fight against communalism and fascism. Vishwanath Tripathi, Asghar Wajahat, Vibhuti Narayan Rai, Shahid Parvez, Rana Siddiqui, Virendra Yadav, Urmilesh, Kuldeep Kumar, Rajiv Shukla, Ashok Vajpayee and Kewal Goswami are among the people who condoled prof Javed's death.

His peers and colleagues remember him as a champion of shared cultural values and a bridge between Urdu and Hindi.

Prof Ali Javed was the Executive President of the Progressive Writers Association. Born in UP's Allahabad on December 31, 1954, he did his graduation from Allahabad University. He did his MA in Urdu and then PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Subsequently, he took up a teaching job at Delhi's Zakir Husain College.

Ali Javed had retired from Delhi University's Urdu Department in 2019. He was admitted to Max Saket on August 12 following a brain haemmorhage. He was later shifted to GB Pant hospital where he breathed his last.

Ali Javed is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
