‘Who is falling faster from grace? Rupee or the govt?’

With the Indian rupee sinking to a fresh record low of 70.32 against the US dollar on August 16, the past has come back to haunt Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Several social media users have been reposting the screen-shots of old tweets by BJP leaders and celebrities as well as old videos that show Narendra Modi targeting UPA government when the rupee depreciated during its tenure. Others have been targeting the previous government over depreciation of rupee against US dollar.

“The pace at which value of rupee is falling, it so feels sometimes, that there is a competition going on between the government and the rupee. Whose grace is falling faster than the other,” Modi says in the clip. In another video, Narendra Modi, as Chief Minister can be heard saying: “These Delhi rulers neither care about country's safety nor about rupee fall. They care about their Chair only.”

“The way Indian rupee is depreciating and (US) dollar getting strengthened, India won’t find a place in the world trade in the days to come,” says Modi in another clip.

One such widely shared old clip features senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj speaking in the Lok Sabha: “Rupee can’t be considered just currency. It is associated with the dignity of the country. as the value of rupee depreciates so does country’s dignity.” Many shared her old tweet in which she had commented: “Today, the rupee lost its value and the Prime Minister his grace”.
