Anger and frustration was palpable in the voices of demonstrators who had gathered to protest the rapes in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh and Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir in New Delhi on Sunday. The demonstration was part of a multi-city protest, organised simultaneously in Bengaluru and Mumbai, among other Indian cities.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is power in both Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, was in the firing line of the protestors, who came from all walks of life.
The Delhi protest, organised under the banner of ‘Not In My Name’, saw people expressing frustration at increased crimes against women. They targeted their anger at the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “They say “Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao”. Did they expect us to save our daughters from rapists? Is that why they coined the slogan? Another protestor said, “I hope the public wakes up in the 2019 elections and realises how their rights are being trampled upon.”
