Amid rising incidents of crime in Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Monday, September 24 requested criminals to abstain from indulging in any activities that tarnish the image of Bihar at least during the period of ‘Pitra Paksha‘.

“With folded hands, I appeal to the criminals to refrain from criminal activities during the ‘pitra paksha’. For rest of the days, whether it is allowed or not, you people keep doing something or the other,” Modi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar was addressing a gathering in Gaya during the ‘Pitra Paksha‘ fair. “Do not indulge in any activity that tarnishes the image of Bihar, brings a bad name to the holy town of Gaya or the state and gives the visitors a reason to complain”, Modi added.

Modi’s comments came amid deteriorating law and order in the state. On the same day that the Deputy CM spoke, unidentified robbers killed a micro finance worker in Hajipur during a robbery. Just a day before, unidentified assailants fired at least 20 rounds at former mayor of Muzaffarpur Sameer Kumar from an AK-47 gun. Three days after the murder, no major progress has been made by police in the case.

Ironically, during the JD(U)-RJD-Congress Mahagathbandhan in the state, news of every crime would see a Sushil Modi press conference, in which he would denounce the Grand Alliance, declaring that Bihar was suffering under ‘jungle raj’. However the Deputy CM of the Grand Alliance, Tejashwi Yadav, was never witnessed pleading with criminals to behave themselves.

RJD leader and now Leader Opposition in the Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav mocked Modi, saying on Twitter, “Bihar Dy CM Sushil Modi shamelessly with folded hands begging to criminals, not to commit any crime in next 15 days as it dents his govt’s image. Later in festive season you are free to do what you do like, kidnap, loot and shoot. Shame on you Mr Modi! The hypocrite reciter of ‘jungle raj’”. Taking a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi said, “Don’t be surprised even if the infamous pair falls at the feet of criminals….after all, criminals have more AK-47 rifles than the Bihar Police.”
