News of leakage of sulfuric acid at the Sterlite Copper Company plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu has caused a stir. Reportedly, the acid leaks had taken place from a storage tank in the sealed plant. The local administration has said it has begun the clean-up action after the leak.
District Collector Sandeep Nanduri said that the Sterlite Copper Plant reported a leak of sulfuric acid, which was stored in a storage tank made here, and "The process of removing leakage in the sulfuric acid warehouse at the Sterlite plant has begun. All necessary security protocols are being followed." Nanduri said that the administration is taking all actions and people do not have to worry about the leak.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had decided to close the Sterlite Plant with immediate effect, after long drawn protests by locals against the plant, who said that the plant was causing both air and water pollution. During the protest, 13 people were killed in police firing, while many people were injured.
