Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani on Wednesday, December 12, was trolled for sharing a fake a tweet posted by a right-wing user Pawan Durrani, which accused Congress President Rahul Gandhi of reversing his position, on waiving off farmers’ loan after his party won assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

Durani posted a couple of short videos of the Congress President attempting to show that Gandhi was reneging on his promise to waive off farmers’ loan. In the first video it was shown that Rahul Gandhi while addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh, was promising the public “I want to assure you from this stage. The day the Congress forms its government in Madhya Pradesh, you count ten days from that day and your loans will be waived off.”

Along with this footage there was another clip from Rahul Gandhi’s recent press conference held in Delhi, just after the Congress had defeated the BJP in the three states on Tuesday, December 11. In that video, Gandhi is heard saying, “Loan waiver is not a solution. The solution will be more complex. The solution will be to support the farmers. The solution will be to build infrastructure and technology. Frankly speaking, the solution is not easy.”

Though Rahul Gandhi made these comments, however Durrani viciously omitted a substantial portion of Rahul Gandhi’s statements to falsely imply that the Congress president taken back his word. The actual sentence is as follows “I said in my election speeches that loan waiver was a supporting step, loan waiver is not a solution.” Nowhere had Rahul Gandhi reneged on his election promises.

In fact, Rahul Gandhi when reminded of his election promises of loan waiver reasserted his party’s position on waiving of farmers loans “We’ve said that as soon as our government is formed, the process to waive off farmers’ loans will start, immediately.”

Which again Durrani chose to exclude in his tweet, making it clear that his intention was to falsely accuse the Congress President of taking an U-turn.

However what was shocking that Smriti Irani, an Union Minister without checking the credibility of the tweet not only gave consent to the fake news but also shared it with her followers.

However twitteratis soon caught with Smriti Irani’s lies and trolled her for her act and brought out the real video.

Irani sharing fake news in the face of her party’s defeat can be seen as a way of BJP not being able to accept its defeat in the states and using any means to spread false news and malicious content to defame the Congress Party’s gains.
