Though the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by the Parliament and approved by the President in December 2019, it hasn’t been implemented yet, as the rules have not been framed. NDTV reported that the Home Ministry has asked for a sixth extension from the parliamentary committees as it needs more time to frame the rules.

The CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) have been controversial and the government saw widespread protests against them, as critics termed them Anti-Muslim. While the CAA is meant to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, it hasn’t been implemented yet. The government hasn’t taken any decision to implement the NRC too as of yet.
