Tweeple protest against proposal to build Neutrino Observatory in Tamil Nadu 

“The time for talking is over, the world needs to act now” said Modi on Tuesday while addressing United Nations Climate Action Summit. He was referring to how the world needs acts of saving the environment, but a wave of tweets started to come on Thursday, #SaveThenifromNeutrino.

The hashtag started trending in a protest the centre’s approval to the India-based Neutrino Observatory. The project was approved by the Department of Atomic energy and Space which is aimed towards study atmospheric neutrino.

The project was cleared by the Central government on March 5, 2018 but it was challenged by the Poovlagin Nanbargal (Friends of the Earth) which is an environmental orgranisation based in Tamil Nadu. In November 2018, NGT said, “No neutrino project without wildlife board approval”.

Environmentalists argues that the project will destroy the vast variety of flora and fauna found in the region. Theni district is on the western ghats which is a hotspot for the Biological diversity and has the tag of ‘World Heritage Site’.

The concerns voiced are ranged from radiation, structural damage to mountains to emission of hazardous chemicals.

The Department of Atomic Energy and Space comes directly under Prime Minister Modi who has recently addressed UN Climate Action Summit and said a lot of things about how human should take actions to protect the planet. What action was the Prime Minister talking about?

Similar protests were seen in September against the cutting of 2700 trees of Aarey forest in Mumbai.
