Newly appointed RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, addressed the media on Wednesday, December 12, where he said he “will try to uphold integrity credibility and autonomy of the great institution the RBI, and take every stakeholder, including the government, along in a consultative manner.
The former Union finance secretary who was the pointsman for the government during the demonetisation in November 2016, describing the bank as a "great institution".
"I will uphold the professionalism, core values, autonomy, integrity and credibility of RBI as an institution. I will ensure that it is intact," he said. "The RBI is a great institution, has a long and rich legacy, It’s an honour and great opportunity to serve RBI.” he added
“ I will try my best to work with everyone and work in the interest of Indian economy and will take measures which the economy requires in a timely manner” and also added “Heartening to know that inflation is on target with a benign outlook"
On Questions of the RBI and Government relations the 25th RBI governor said “I don't know if the relationship is good or not but we have to have stakeholders consultation. Govt is not just a stakeholder but also runs the country,economy & manages major policy decisions. So, there has to be discussion between govt and RBI.”
“Wouldn't go into issues between RBI and government but every institution has to maintain its autonomy and also adhere to accountability” said RBI Governor Das
On being asked about the problems of public sector bank, the RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said “I have convened a meeting with CEOs & MDs of public sector bank Chiefs soon. Banking is an important segment in our economy is facing several challenges that need to be dealt with. It's the banking sector on which I’d like to focus immediately”
Das who took over the reins of the Reserve Bank earlier on Tuesday December 11, following the resignation of Urjit Patel on Monday December 10
