Our Constitution formed by Valmiki’s ideology, says Rahul Gandhi; flags off ‘Shobha Yatra’

Revered by Dalits who form about 17-20 percent of the total population, Valmiki is regarded as the harbinger-poet of the epic Ramayana

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi flagged off a “Shobha Yatra” on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti on Wednesday and said the country’s Constitution was formed by Maharshi Valmiki’s ideology.

Highlighting that Dalits and minorities in the society are being attacked Rahul Gandhi said the ideology that was propagated by Maharishi Valmiki is under attack under the BJP regime.

“Valmiki ji showed a path to the nation. His message was about love and brotherhood. Today when we see India, we see his message being attacked. Our Constitution is a Constitution of Valmiki ji's ideology,” the Congress leader said.

Taking aim at the Modi government, he said, “I would like to give a message to the Dalit brothers and sisters that Congress party will stop these attacks. The more they break the country, the more we will connect the country. The more they spread hatred, the more we will speak of love and brotherhood”.

“We can observe that his ideology is being attacked. The interests of the minorities in the country are being suppressed. On behalf of the Congress party, I would like to say that we will not let this trend of suppressing minorities continue,” he added.

Speaking to the media after flagging off the Yatra, Rahul Gandhi said, “Greetings on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti! Maharishi Valmiki propagated the idea of love and brotherhood. Our Constitution is based on the ideas of Maharishi Valmiki.”

Revered by Dalits who form about 17-20 percent of the total population, Valmiki is regarded as the harbinger-poet of the epic Ramayana.

He is referred to as the Adi Kavi – the first poet in Sanskrit literature. It is said that Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas is based on Valmiki’s Ramayan.
