Renowned historian and feminist scholar Uma Chakravarti would be delivering the Social Change Golden Jubilee Lecture 2020 organised by the Council for Social Development, on February 24.

She would be speaking on ‘Home to the Borders: Violence against women, impunity and resistance’.

The lecture examines the arc of violence that women in India have been historically subjected to as well as the new arenas in which violence is now manifesting itself.

The presentation focuses on four arenas in which violence against women, especially sexual violence, needs to be located as each of the four arenas has a specific feature that is linked to the manner in which impunity operates––thereby ‘invisibilising’ the violence––and the long road traversed by the women's movement in challenging that violence.

The four arenas are:

  • Homes where violence is enacted in the intimate sphere of the family
  • Streets and fields where caste and class power provide impunity to the perpetrators
  • Villages and regions where communal and targeted violence have been enacted often with administrative and the State's complicity, especially in recent decades
  • Borderlands where impunity is sought to be derived from special laws that the State has put into operation to control turbulent populations

The event would be held at India International Centre’s Multipurpose Hall at 6.30 PM. It would be chaired by Prof Muchkund Dubey, President, Council for Social Development.
