NHRC registered a case against Mamata Banerjee, CM, West Bengal and Commissioner of Police, Kolkata on the basis of a complaint filed by Advocate Amrish Ranjan Pandey, National Secretary, Indian Youth Congress and Advocate Ambuj Dixit, National Co-Coordinator, Legal Cell, Indian Youth Congress. The complaint pertains to omission and assistance to goons for perpetrating violence during Kolkata Municipal Corporation Elections held on December 19, 2021. The complaint has been registered as Case No. 117/25/5/2022.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation Elections were held on 19.12.2021 wherein the ruling party, TMC allegedly indulged in large scale violence against the opposition parties. Several Congress Party candidates were beaten up allegedly by TMC goons. The candidate from Ward 16 was reportedly stripped naked in full public view. Similarly, Congress candidate and leaders were brutally beaten up in Ward 45 in the presence of several police officers.
There was a large scale violation of human rights and the police department and state administration did absolutely nothing and in some places rather assisted the goons, the Indian Youth Congress alleged in its complaint.

Now as per the procedure, the NHRC will issue a notice to the accused parties and conduct investigation and further proceedings as per the procedure of The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
