Lawyers, activists launch free helpline for victims of hate crimes

United Against Hate, a collective of rights activists, lawyers, journalists, academicians and community leaders, on Monday launched a toll free helpline for the victims of hate crimes at an event at the National Press Club in New Delhi.

Introducing the helpline service, Nadeem Khan of United Against Hate said that the helpline was launched in view of rising cases of mob attacks and hate crimes in the country.

“We will try to help the victims of such assaults and help them get justice in the courts. We will draw media’s attention towards every such incident. Apart from providing legal aid to the victims of hate crimes, our aim is also to document such attacks and build a phased movement around it,” he said.

Victims of hate crimes can contact on toll free number 1800-3133-60000 for any help.

Those present at the event included Father Michael Villemy, founder president of Minority Christian Forum; Supreme Court lawyers Sanjay Hegde, Fuzail Ayubi and Ehtesham Hashmi; prof Apoorvanand Jha; prof Ratan Lal;

JNU professor Gazala Jamil; Maulana Hakeemuddin of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind; senior journalist Urmilesh and Malik Mohtashim Khan of Jamat-e-Islami Hind among others. said that this attempt to ensure justice in this atmosphere of despair is commendable.
