Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, India's first Oscar winner, died at her home on Thursday after prolonged illness, her daughter said. She was 91.

Athaiya, who won an Oscar for her work in the 1983 film Gandhi, passed away peacefully in her sleep, her daughter Radhika Gupta told PTI.

The last rites took place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai

"She passed away early this morning. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain. For the last three years, she was bedridden because one side (of her body) was paralysed, her daughter said.

Athaiya, who was born in Kolhapur, began her career as a costume designer in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt's 1956 superhit "C.I.D.".

CBI refutes closure of SSR case, says probe still on

Amid some media reports that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to file a closure report in Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death case, the federal agency on Thursday refuted the claims and said that such reports are "erroneous" and the investigation is still continuing.

CBI spokesperson R.K. Gaur said in a statement, "CBI continues to investigate the death of Sushant. There are certain speculative reports in the media that the CBI has reached a conclusion. It may be reiterated that these reports are speculative and erroneous."

The remarks came amid media speculation that the agency will be filing a closure report soon.

ED arrests director of Gujarat firm in bank fraud case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Niketa Baldevbhai Dave, Director of Pentium Infotech Ltd. and Hirak Biotech Ltd. in connection with Ahmedabad's People's Cooperative Bank Ltd. money laundering case.

The ED said that Dave was arrested under the sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in a case relating to fraud in the cooperative bank. A local court sent her to four-days ED custody.

The ED filed a case on the basis of a case registered by the CID-Crime in Gandhinagar in May 2009. The Gujarat Police in its FIR alleged that Dave, Pratik R. Shah (also a director) and others committed fraud of Rs 25.25 crore with the APCBL.

Cinema halls reopen in Bengal with Covid restrictions

Almost seven months after a nationwide lockdown was imposed, movie theatres and multiplexes have reopened in West Bengal on Thursday with strict Covid-19 safety protocols for the viewers.

The theatres have reopened with only 50 percent of its total seating capacity so that there is a minimum distance of at least 3-metres between two people watching the movie.

"We are encouraging paperless entry and digital payments at the ticket counter. One has to enter inside the movie theatre after thermal screening and a thorough sanitisation process. Masks and gloves are also being distributed to every person at the entry point before getting inside the auditorium," said Puneet Gupta, spokesperson for INOX Leisure Ltd.

Delhi records 'very poor' air quality, Gr Noida worse

A noxious haze hung over the national capital on Thursday as its air turned foul and the quality index mounted to 'very poor' category, for the second time this week. The East Delhi district recorded highest pollution.

Many colonies in Hyderabad and suburbs remained under water on Thursday while Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel continued rescue and relief work in the flood-hit areas.

Clear skies provided respite to the city battered by heavy rains in the intervening night of October 13-14 but the areas abutting overflowing lakes and nalas remained inundated while traffic on damaged highways is yet to be restored.

Personnel of Army, NDRF and Disaster Response Force (DRF) of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation continued rescue and relief works in the worst-affected areas. People trapped in marooned houses were being shifted to safe places through boats.

One of the worst floods in the city's history has so far claimed 19 lives while five others are missing.

Two arrested for raping minor girl for 22 days in Odisha

The Odisha Police have arrested two persons in the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in Cuttack, said an official on Thursday.

The accused have been identified as Santosh Behera and Rakesh Rout.

The two were apprehended within 24 hours of reporting of the offence, said Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi.

"Investigation will be completed early for both accused to stand trial and justice done," he said.

The 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in captivity inside a poultry farm for 22 days in Cuttack.

Gurugram cinemas reopen on Friday: Tickets to cost 75% less, 6 shows on Day 1

The audience will have to wait for one more day to watch films in the cinema halls in Gurugram as the PVR and other managements have decided to start operations from Friday.

The ticket prices have been reduced by 75 percent to woo the audience back. According to the management, six shows will be run at PVR on the first day.

All cinema halls will comply with the SOPs mandated by the Union Government. These include maintaining distances of one seat in the halls, 50 percent capacity, masks at all times, proper ventilation and air condition temperature settings at above 23 degrees Celsius. Also, markings have been made to ensure social distancing in the cinema hall galleries.

3 labourers mowed down by truck in UP's Shamli

Three labourers were crushed to death under the wheels of a speeding truck in Shamli district on Thursday, police said.

Sanjiv, Shubham, and Parvesh aged between 22 to 27 years died in the incident while another worker received critical injuries and was hospitalised, police said.

The four were travelling to Fatehpur village from Banat village on a motorcycle when the accident occurred, circle officer Amit Saxena said.

The truck driver managed to escape from the spot along with the vehicle, police said.

Global COVID-19 cases top 38.4 million: Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 38.4 million, while the deaths have soared to more than 1,091,240, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Thursday morning, the total number of cases stood at 38,426,373 and the fatalities increased to 1,091,245, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 7,911,497 and 216,734, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 7,239,389, while the country's death toll soared to 110,586.

The other top 15 countries with the maximum amount of cases are Brazil (5,140,863), Russia (1,332,824), Argentina (931,967), Colombia (930,159), Spain (908,056), Peru (853,974), Mexico (830,502), France (820,376), South Africa (696,414), the UK (657,459), Iran (513,219), Chile (485,372), Iraq (413,215), Bangladesh (382,959), and Italy (372,799), the CSSE figures showed.

Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 151,747.

The countries with a death toll above 10,000 are Mexico (84,891), the UK (43,245), Italy (36,289), Peru (33,419), Spain (33,413), France (33,058), Iran (29,349), Colombia (28,306), Argentina (24,921), Russia (23,069), South Africa (18,151), Chile (13,415), Ecuador (12,264), Indonesia (12,156), Belgium (10,244) and Iraq (10,021).
